After a spell in the early 2020s that saw plenty of friction within the Sunrisers Hyderabad organisation, leading to the team seeing off franchise stalwarts such as David Warner and Rashid Khan, the Orange Army has finally found a new identity to structure itself around as they look to form a new dynasty at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium. Fresh off a phenomenal IPL 2024 campaign, SRH have succeeded in keeping many of those pieces in place heading into IPL 2025, and it’s clear that they are gunning for another run at the trophy, and committed to play high-octane, attacking cricket as they do so.
They have the marauding batting core of Travis Head, Abhishek Sharma, and Heinrich Klaasen, a trio which is about as powerful and aggressive as it gets in world cricket while also being a reliable source of runs, and one that every other team in the IPL is almost certainly jealous of seeing in the same team. Add to this the retention of Nitish Kumar Reddy, who had a breakthrough season and should be full on confidence after his performance in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, and provide some incredible balance to the SRH lineup.
If that wasn't good enough, SRH were also able to land a potential superstar at number three, Ishan Kishan joining them and due a massive IPL season after having slipped a touch in the reckoning of the national team. Add to this someone like Abhinav Manohar to act as insurance in the depth, or Atharva Taide as an insurance middle order batter, and SRH have done impressively well to cover all their bases.
It only gets better with the bowling. With Pat Cummins already in place as captain and the leader of the pace attack, SRH pulled off something of a coup by landing Mohammed Shami to support him. Shami has looked fit and raring to go, and could be a difference-maker for this team as they also try to keep that strong bowling core that SRH has always been associated with. Alongside this star duo in the pace attack in Harshal Patel, who always seems ready to take wickets in the IPL. While he is criticised for being expensive, this is probably the best landing spot for him, where he can afford to attack and go for runs as long as he provides wickets. They also have some interesting depth options with Wiaan Mulder, who has impressed for South Africa, and Simarjeet Singh.
Finally, in the spin department, Rahul Chahar and Adam Zampa form a formidable pair of wrist-spinners, who will provide both defensive and attacking spin options. With the option of Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma to bowl as well, there is a lot to like about this team, which may be even stronger than it was last year. Can they match the results, and can they perhaps go one better?
