CSK Squad IPL 2025

The yellow Chennai Super Kings jersey is perhaps the most iconic shirt in the world of cricket outside of the international teams, and donning that jersey comes with its own set of expectations and demands of the players who are chosen to wear it. For IPL 2025, CSK’s squad is a mixture of the new and the old, those who are familiar with the pressures of the famous yellow jersey, and those who will quickly have to become accustomed to it.

Of course, the big news is that MS Dhoni stays on in Chennai for another year, not yet entertaining talks of retiring as he looks to sign off on a good note at the Chepauk stadium. Dhoni plays cricket from IPL to IPL, and while he is something of a luxury player in the eyes of many, he showed last season that there is still power in that bat, and the sort of tactical nous that elevates any team. Add to that his reliability with the gloves, and Dhoni continues to be an asset, even at the age of 43.

Alongside Dhoni, CSK retained captain Ruturaj Gaikwad, who knows a big IPL season could be key to marking any sort of breakthrough to the Indian team as his window seems to shrink and shrink. Gaikwad will have plenty of experience around him, as Ravindra Jadeja was also retained for big money, providing that all-round balance. The big news from CSK’s auction was the reunion of another Chennai boy who is well aware of what it means to be part of that family and to represent the city: Ravichandran Ashwin finally makes his return to CSK, where he will form a formidable spin trio alongside Jadeja and their most expensive buy of the auction, Afghanistan’s Noor Ahmad.

While those three will have the spin department on lockdown, the pace will be spearheaded by retention Matheesa Pathirana, whose slinky action and searing pace mean he is definitely a superstar in the making. In the need of new-ball bowling to complement his skillsets, CSK were able to land Khaleel Ahmed, who has been one of the better powerplay bowlers in the last few years, and can also call upon Sam Curran, Jamie Overton, or Nathan Ellis if an extra pacer is needed.

If CSK do have a concern, it will be about making the batting click. Gaikwad will have either Devon Conway or Rachin Ravindra alongside him, which is a solid partnership but one which seems slightly outdated in terms of attack. It will be an all-Indian middle order, likely one that sees Rahul Tripathi at three, Shivam Dube at 4, and someone like Deepak Hooda at 5, before Jadeja, Curran, and Dhoni enter the picture. It’s a very serviceable batting lineup, but one that isn’t amongst the best in the tournament.

CSK, however, always seem to have that magic something that just works, with an awareness of their home field unlike any other team in this league. What is for certain is that this is a squad that will be difficult to break down.
