It is a massive statement in the IPL to head into a new cycle with a new coach. It’s an even bigger vote of confidence to give that head coach INR 110.5 crore to spend in their first auction. And it might be a decision that is just bold enough to shake Punjab Kings out of their malaise in the history of the IPL, to take them to only their third playoff appearance, and to potentially, just maybe, help them land their hands on their first IPL trophy.
Ricky Ponting has had success as coach of Delhi Capitals, and is one of the best cricket brains on this planet. Having rescued DC from a similarly wayward and lacklustre path by constructing a terrific team back in 2019, the idea for PBKS is to give him the keys and ask him to do it all over again. For Ponting, this meant going all guns blazing to get the three premier players available in the three categories he saw as critical to winning cricket games in the IPL: the best Indian seamer on offer, the best Indian spinner, and the best Indian captain.
In come Arshdeep Singh and Yuzvendra Chahal for INR 18 crore each, and in comes Shreyas Iyer for a scarcely believable 26.75 cr, showing just how much faith Ponting has in the man who captained DC to their first ever finals in 2020. At this point in the auction, many were wondering whether PBKS had blown their massive monetary advantage in the bidding wars by splurging over half their budget on just these three players, plus retainees Prabhsimran Singh and Shashank Singh. They had a strong, excellent structure, but it would be all for nothing if Punjab couldn’t find the right players to support that backbone.
That’s where Punjab truly put together a smart team, stacked with Ponting’s favoured Australians, but also with plenty of talent elsewhere. The pace bowling was added with the introduction of Marco Jansen, Azmatullah Omarzai, Vijaykumar Vyshak, and Lockie Ferguson. The batting was supplemented by an Australian trio of Josh Inglis, Marcus Stoinis, and Glenn Maxwell, who could form an iron-clad unit around Shreyas Iyer at number three, with Aaron Hardie and Nehal Wadhera present as backup. There is plenty of power throughout that batting lineup, and T20 experience to come with it.
Harpreet Brar also remains in Punjab, and will provide spin from one end to support Chahal, while Maxwell and Stoinis will also be on hand to turn their arms over. It’s a very solid unit made by Punjab for this season of the IPL, even if it came after a big gamble. Can this Australian infusion supported by a host of talented players from all across the world come good? Figuring out the right overseas combination might be the trickiest part for Ponting, but that’s one of those that is a good problem to have.
