Amid cleanliness awards, garbage heaps plague Scooter Market in Ludhiana

A static compactor was installed in the Scooter Market opposite Bhai Chattar Singh park around a few months ago under Ludhiana Smart City project; though the compactor has been awarded for various initiatives, including urban cleanliness and sustainable infrastructure, however it remains non-functional.

According to a new official order, tourist vehicles entering Sikkim will now have to carry large garbage bags. The order was issued by the Tourism Department.

It will be the responsibility of the tour operators, travel agencies and vehicle drivers to inform the tourists about the use of garbage bags for waste disposal.

Efficient management of waste disposal sites can curb air pollution

The practical way to deal with such legacy dumpsites, which are a source of local air pollution and fire accidents, is to stabilise the slopes. We must start recovering the landfill gas and then either flaring or harvesting it to be used as a potential fuel.
