Residents have been complaining to the municipal council regarding waste littered across the city. However, the Zirakpur municipal council has only assured them, but the result has been lacking, say the residents. The garbage has been piling up at various collection points.

The residents of Zirakpur on Sunday came up with a novel idea to protest against the civic authorities’ apathy as they clicked selfies with garbage and posted it on social media.

Residents have been complaining to the municipal council regarding waste littered across the city. However, the Zirakpur municipal council has only assured them, but the result has been lacking, say the residents. The garbage has been piling up at various collection points.

The MC is not getting the place to dump the garbage as Bishanpura residents have been opposing the move to make a garbage dump near their village.

Zirakpur residents said the MC has to look for the solution. “We are living in very unhygienic conditions. Garbage is being dumped at the collection point for several days now,” said Suneel Chadda, a local resident.

Now the residents have resorted to a unique way of protesting. Today several residents clicked selfie with garbage. “We will make a collage of it and post it on social media. We will send it to the authorities,” said Manoj Das, general secretary of the confederation of Resident Welfare Association.

He said the issue of garbage disposal is not new. “We have been facing it for long. The civic authorities are not realising the gravity of the situation,” he said.

Chief sanitary inspector Rajinder Singh said there is an issue of land for the dumping site. “We are deliberating on the issue. Soon things will be streamlined,” he said.

Zirakpur generates around 60 tonnes of garbage everyday, with no alternative to dump the waste. The sanitation workers had recently started dumping garbage near Bishanpura village as a private company entrusted with the responsibility of processing garbage at Lalru had not got pollution clearance permissions from the Punjab Pollution Control Board. Now, the Bishanpura villagers have been opposing the civic authorities for dumping the town’s garbage near the village.
