UP board result 2017 today: Students seek blessings, vent anger at new evaluation rule

Thousands of students across Uttar Pradesh offered prayers seeking blessings on Thursday, a day ahead of the announcement of UP Board high school or Class 10 and intermediate or Class 12 examinations results.

The UP Board will declare the results on Friday at 12 noon. With folded hands and prayers on their lips, the students were anxiously waiting to see their marks and plan their future accordingly.

The UP Board results are normally declared in May but it was delayed this year due to the assembly elections held in February-March. Last year, the exams began in February, ahead of CBSE and ISC, and the results were declared on May 16.

In Allahabad, anxious examinees spent their day visiting holy places and calculating scores according to how they think they have performed. However, some were upset over the latest rule of the board for getting the answer sheets receiving above 90% marks reevaluated.

Deepak Patel, a Class 10 student of Kesar Vidyapeeth Inter College, is sure of a first division but is upset with the new rule for evaluation that was brought into effect this year by the board.

“The board has set a new rule that any answer sheet getting above 90% marks would be re-checked by the deputy head Examiner of the respective evaluation centre. This could make evaluators keep scores below the 90% mark which would be a sheer injustice for the meritorious,” he said.

Yugam Soni of Government Inter College also started the day with a visit to the Hanuman Temple in Civil Lines area with his father. “Strict anti-copying measures are welcome as it would allow merit to surface. But double checking of answer sheets with above 90% marks is not acceptable,” he said echoing Patel’s views.

Sumit Dhuliya, a Class 12 student of Kesar Vidyapeeth, however, watched the cricket match between India and Sri Lanka to de-stress after visiting a temple near his home in the morning.

“I have done well and hopefully would bag good marks. However, I still feel that rechecking of answer-sheets of students scoring above 90% was uncalled for. Why doubt a meritorious student or an honest evaluator?” he questioned.

Anamta Khan, a Class 10 student in Lucknow, said students are a bit anxious as the results have got delayed. “This is my first board examination and I’m a bit nervous and restless,” she said.

Sagar Arora, a Class 12 student of SKD Academy in Lucknow’s Rajajipuram, is also nervously waiting for his results and said he wants to become an engineer. “It is important that I score good marks in all the science subjects,” he said.

Anuradha Yadav, a student of the same school, is not only competing with her classmates but her brothers as well. “There are three people from my house who took the board exam this year. I’m competing with my brother who is in the same class and I have an elder brother who is waiting for his Class 12 results,” she said.

SKD Academy’s director Manish Singh and his colleagues held meetings with students to help them cool their nerves and relax ahead of the results. “We have asked them to treat their mark sheet only as a piece of paper. A few marks less or more will not determine their future and destiny,” he said.

Over 60,61,000 examinees - 34,04,715 students in Class 10 and 26,56,319 in Class 12 - registered to appear in the high school and intermediate exams.

As the board deployed strict measures to curb the use of unfair means in the board exams this year, 5,94,503 lakh students quit the exams midway and 1862 examinees were caught copying.

This year, the board also provided coded answer sheets in 31 districts of the state that were identified as sensitive in order to check cheating during the exams.

In some districts, mass copying was reported due to which 69 exams of various subjects were cancelled and 91 schools were debarred from holding the board exams for the next five years.

The evaluation of board’s around 4.6 crore answer sheets began from April 27 at 253 evaluation centres in the state. A significant 1.37 lakh teachers were assigned to the task.
