* The board set up 1,309 examination centres in Uttarakhand and 230 were identified as “sensitive”. A majority of the “sensitive” centres were in Nainital, Chamoli and Haridwar districts of the hill state, officials said. There are more than 17,000 government schools across all 13 districts in Uttarakhand.
* Last year, the results were encouraging as 73.67% students cleared the Class 10 exam and 78.89% candidates were declared successful in Class 12.
* The government, which wants the pass percentage of students to go up to 80, has made several efforts to increase the figures.
* The board adopted the National Council for Educational Research and Training (NCERT) pattern. It also decided to introduce multiple choice questions for the first time this year to better the statistics but its success can only be ascertained after the results, an official said.
* “Various problems are encountered by schools situated in remote areas. Lack of teachers and infrastructure are a few issues due to which the pass percentage could not be increased over the years,” the board’s former secretary VP Simalti said citing reasons for the low pass percentage of the students.
