Bringing glory to the state, seven cadets of Maharaja Ranjit Singh Armed Forces Preparatory Institute (AFPI), Sector 77, are in the top 50 in the country, after the final result of the National Defence Academy and Naval Academy Examination (II), 2017 was declared. The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) conducts the exam. One of these cadets has made it to the Indian Naval Academy. More than five lakh boys took the exam and a merit list of 447 candidates was released on May 9 (Wednesday).

The Punjab government set up the AFPI in 2011 for training select young men for joining the armed forces through the National Defence Academy.

AFPI director BS Grewal said, “Thirty five cadets appeared in the NDA entrance exam and 28 cleared the examination. These cadets were put through the Services Selection Boards at various centres in the country and 20 cadets cleared the Board,” he said. “Of these one cadet is an aspirant for the Indian Naval Academy and the other 19 are on the NDA merit list,” he added.

Ropar lad is 10th in country

“Cadet Gurbeer Singh Sohal and cadet Amol Gautam got 10th and 12th positions respectively,” he said. Sohal, son of a manager in an engineering firm, belongs to Ropar while Gautam belongs to Nangal and is the son of an advocate. Other cadets who got positions in the top 50 are Shubhdeep Singh, Raghav Arora, Japneet Singh, Tegjeet Singh and Aashray Thukral, he added.

“The AFPI has sent 90 boys to the NDA and other service academies. Once these cadets also join, the institute would have notched up more than 100 successes in a little over five years,” he claimed.

The institute was established in 2011 and its first batch of cadets passed out in April 2013. The discipline is core mantra of this institute as a typical day in student’s life here starts dot at 6am with a PT drill.

Then he departs for school at 7.45am, followed by study period/NDA training between 3pm to 4.30pm, games between 4.30pm to 5.30pm, tuition classes between 6pm to 8.15pm and then lights out at 10pm.
