The preliminary exam was of qualifying nature and its score will not be included in the final selection of the candidates for the job after the interview. The final merit will be prepared on the basis of the candidates’ performance in the main examination and the interview taken together.

PIL against recruitment notification

In May, a bench of the Madras high court issued a notice to the Centre and the bank’s chairperson (central recruitment and promotion) over a public interest litigation seeking to quash the notification for the recruitment the associates.

Justice R Mahadevan and justice SS Sundar also sought the Centre’s explanation within two weeks on the PIL filed by S Gurukrishna Gokul, an aspirant.

In his PIL, Gokul opposed the recruitment notification on the ground that it did not allow those to apply for the exam who had failed to repay a loan or those who had an adverse report in the Credit Information Bureau Limited or Cibil.

He said the conditions would prevent a large number of economically and socially backward candidates from applying for the posts. In his plea, he contended that if such candidates get selected for the job they would be in a position to repay the loans.

He also opposed the notification saying that the application for the posts had been invited only by online registration without giving wide advertisements in newspapers, which is against the dictum of the Supreme Court.

Gokul’s PIL was heard by a bench of justice Nooty Ramamohana Rao and justice SS Sundar on June 7. They said that the SBI could proceed with the recruitment process as several candidates had already filed their applications and would be adversely affected if the examinations were cancelled.

However, they also said that their final judgement, which is still pending, would have “an impact on the results of the entire recruitment process.”
