Chennai: Pranav Ramakrishnan, a Class 12 computer sciences student, has cracked the JEE with a high all India rank of 28, no mean achievement for a student who began preparing for the all-important engineering entrance examination in India when he was in Class 11.

“I wasn’t keeping ahead of the class and peer pressure made my work harder and the high rank has motivated me to work even harder and get into the top ranks in JEE advanced, which will get me entry into the IITs. My choice is mechanical (engineering) at IIT Madras, but if I don’t get it then it will be computer science at a good IIT,” Ramakrishnan told Hindustan Times before getting down to celebrate his success in cracking the tough exam.

About JEE Advanced, to be held on May 21, Ramakrishnan said he was well prepared, but the rank in JEE Main had come as a boost. Many of his classmates from Maharishi Vidya Mandir school of Chetpet got through the JEE first stage.

About the institute where he was coached for JEE, Ramakrishnan says he was “lucky I got into the first batch. Here almost everyone was way ahead of me, and to catch up with them was a challenge. I am lucky I was able to concentrate hard, along with board exams. I certainly grew due to peer pressure.”

Another topper, Aditya Vavre (rank 97), also from Ramakrishnan’s school, said his success would motivate him to perform well in JEE advanced, which he said “was at an entirely different level.” He said the JEE Main success egged him on to perform even better and improve his rank in JEE Advanced and secure a seat at IIT Bombay in computer sciences, he said.
