Gorakhpur University Paper leak: DDU Gorakhpur University on Tuesday cancelled the exams in two subjects after their papers, one of which matched the original, surfaced on social media.

The Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Gorakhpur University authorities cancelled the BSc part one mathematics and BA part two sociology examinations on Tuesday after it was found that the question papers of both subjects were leaked on social media the previous day.

According to the administration, it will lodge a first information report (FIR) with police about the leak and constituted an inquiry committee. Fresh exam dates will be decided on April 19.

The panel found that the maths paper was leaked but the sociology questions doing the rounds on social media didn’t match those set by the university, the institution’s spokesman Harsh Sinha said.

“Papers of mathematics and sociology were made viral on social media by some miscreants. It’s been found that the sociology questions were based on previous year’s paper and didn’t match the paper set for Tuesday’s exam. Yet the university took no risk and cancelled both papers,” he said.

The maths examination was scheduled between 8am and 11am on Tuesday, while the sociology test was to be held between 2pm and 5pm.

Angry students staged a protest outside the university administration’s office and sought suspension of examination controller Amrendra Singh for the leak.

“It’s a serious fault of the university, but students are made to suffer,” Pooja Singh, an examinee, said.

Vice chancellor VK Singh appealed to the students to keep patience and assured them of strict action against the culprits.

He wrote to the district magistrate and senior superintendent of police, seeking an investigation and action against the people responsible for the leak.

The crisis in the Uttar Pradesh university follows a massive public outrage across the country against the Central Board of Secondary Examination (CBSE) after the Class 10 mathematics and Class 12 economics papers for the final exams this year were leaked on social media.

The CBSE, the country’s largest school board, will hold a re-test for Class 12 economics students, but it decided against a re-exam for Class 10, saying the impact of the leak was limited.
