Dubious distinction: At 163 schools, no student passed Class 10 PSEB exam

In 176 schools, 10% or below students passed. However the state improved over all pass percentage by 2%. The highest number of schools with nil results is in Tarn Taran district.

Even as the government fails to initiate action against poor performing teachers in the past, not even a single student could pass class 10 examinations in 163 schools of 7,700-odd institutions across the state.

In 176 schools, 10% or below students passed. However the state improved over all pass percentage by 2%. The highest number of schools with nil results is in Tarn Taran district. In Tarn Taran, all students of Class-10 failed in 51 schools of 330. Tarn Taran is also at the last position in term of pass percentage with 33% pass percentage. 73 schools have less than 10% result. There is 100% result in 10 schools.

Most affiliated schools put a poor show in Tarn Taran district. Tarn Taran district has maximum schools (51), followed by Amritsar (27) with nil result. There is 100% result in 669 schools.

Of Amritsar’s 600 schools, 83 have 100% result, with 27 schools getting a zilch. Ludhiana that gave the state topper has highest number of schools at 1,063. Of total, 71 have 100% result, but 20 schools recorded nil result.

A senior official of the education department said, requesting anonymity, “When we talk about result it not the government schools alone. There are several private schools mushroomed in recent past. Government schools still have some system, but private schools are not regulated in terms of educational standards.”

Amarinder to chair meeting on results today

Education minister OP Soni said the result is better than last year but still not satisfactory. “Despite the state government’s thrust on education, many schools have nil result. Some government and even private schools performed poorly,” he said, adding, “Chief minster Captain Amarinder Singh will chair a meeting in Chandigarh on Friday to discuss Classes 10 and 12.”

“There are many issues and we need to address all of them. It will take time but we can’t defend poor results,” Soni said. The pass percentage this year is at 59.4% is higher than the last year’s 57.50%. Of 3.68 lakh students, including 3.36 lakh regular and 31,756 open candidates, appeared in the examination.
