Centre for energy studies on cards

Teacher-taught ratio imbalance hits AU efforts
ALLAHABAD UNIVERSITY (AU) is today paying a heavy price for its pioneering initiative to start three-year degree programmes in the state of Uttar Pradesh in 1986. Thanks to the lack of adequate support from the state government over the years the varsity is today facing an acute shortage of teachers with teacher-taught ratio going up to 1:68 against the UGC recommended ratio of 1:9.

Uttaranchal raw deal to UPRTOU degrees
A PROBLEM over recognition of their degrees has suddenly arisen before some of the students of the Uttar Pradesh Rajarshi Tandon Open University (UPRTOU). In a surprising move, the Uttaranchal Public Service Commission has refused to recognise the degrees awarded to them by the UPRTOU and on that basis has not sent call letters for the interviews being held for the Trained Graduate Teachers (TGT) to around five dozen applicants.

Uncertainty over admissions
UNCERTAINTY RULES the campus over under-graduate and post-graduate admission tests of Allahabad University (AU) for the new session. While in the past, the entire admission process and details of the admission programme used to get finalised by this time of the year, this time round even the rough sketch of the admission tests has not been finalised, thanks to delay in the framing of the requisite new ordinances and finalising of the minutes of the all-important March 26 meeting of the varsity's admission committee.

300 aspiring lawyers still waiting
OVER 300 aspiring lawyers are still waiting for Allahabad University (AU) to fulfil its promise and start the LLB (five-year) Integrated course from the forthcoming academic session. Admission forms of these students continue to remain deposited with the varsity since June 2005. AU officials, however, seem hardly interested in speeding up the matter or seem concerned as to the effect their lackadaisical attitude may have on the future of these students.

IIIT-A to empower rural India
EXPERTS OF Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT-A) are all set to come to the aid of the farmers of the State. In partnership with the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), the IIIT-A is going to make the latest knowledge about farming available to them through a series of Gram Gyan Kendra Kiosks (GGKs) and an Agricultural Planning and Information Bank (APIB) that it plans to set up and nine Village Resource Centres (VRCs) that are ready to be put into service.

ALLAHABAD UNIVERSITY (AU) administration has drawn up an ambitious plan for an overall revamp and expansion of the 'Oxford of the East'. The AU Vice-Chancellor Prof Rajen Harshe has already left for New Delhi on Tuesday night with the details of the plan seeking a sanction of a whopping Rs 300 crore grant from the University Grants Commission (UGC) that has the potential to transform the varsity and set it on a firm path of recovery.
