Rs 36.90 cr okayed for AU and colleges

THE UNIVERSITY Grants Commission (UGC) has approved a whopping Rs 36.90 crore as Revised Budget Estimates 2005-06 (Non-Plan) for Allahabad University (AU).

The sum also includes a one-time special grant for the university, its Constituent colleges as well as the GB Pant Social Science Institute—but only after the adjustment of the internal receipts and grant already received from the state government.

As per the March 21 letter of UGC Additional Secretary Tilak R Kem to the AU Registrar, the UGC has sanctioned a sum of around Rs 20.29 crore for meeting the salary expenditure of the teaching staff and around Rs 6.80 crore for salary of the non-teaching staff members of AU.

A sum of Rs 42 lakh has been sanctioned for meeting the expenditure of retirement benefits and pension besides a one time special grant of Rs 2 crore for repairs of old buildings taking the total Revised Budget Estimate for 2005-06 to around Rs 35.96 crore.

However, after deducting the internal receipts and amount incurred up to July 13, 2005 which have to be met by the state government, the University Grants Commission share has come to Rs 24.15 crore.

As for the constituent colleges, the UGC has sanctioned Rs 1 crore for salary, pension and other expenditure for the period July 14, 2005 to March 31, 2006.

This is besides one-time special grant of Rs 1.75 crore for nine colleges for strengthening the library, laboratory as well as repair and renovation of the college buildings.

Out of this total one-time grant, Allahabad Degree College, CMP Degree College, Ewing Christian College and SS Khanna Degree College have been allotted Rs 25 lakh each while Arya Kanya Degree College, Iswar Saran Degree College, Hamidia Girls Degree College, Jagat Taran Girls Degree College and Rajarshi Tandon Girls Degree College have been allotted Rs 15 lakh each.

The GB Pant Social Science Institute has been allotted Rs 1 crore for the period between July 14, 2005 and March 31, 2006.
