Maha govt begins withdrawal of cases against Maratha protestors

The Maharashtra government has initiated the process of withdrawing cases against Maratha protestors, but it may take time as chargesheets are yet to be filed. The government has asked for a report on cases lodged after September 1. District level committees will propose withdrawal of cases where there was no loss of life or public property worth over ₹5 lakh. The deadline for withdrawal of cases has not been extended yet. A high-level committee is reviewing cases referred to it by district level committees.

Differences have emerged between Maratha activist Manoj Jarange-Patil and the Maharashtra government over the deadline for a decision on the issue of Maratha reservation. Jarange-Patil claims the government has given a written assurance that a decision will be made by December 24, while the government had said it had until January 2. The government has stated it will discuss with Jarange-Patil if more time is needed. The chief minister has held meetings with officials to implement promises to the Maratha community and expand the scope of a committee advising on the issue.
