Punjab brings down age for OOAT treatment for drug addicts to 16

This means addicts aged 16 and above will no longer need to be admitted at rehab centres and can get treatment while living at their own homes and attending school as normal. Until now, OOAT treatment was allowed only for those above the age of 18 while underage addicts had to be admitted to rehab centres throughout their treatment, with an attendant present.

The fresh move was necessitated in view of the rising number of children struggling with substance abuse across Punjab. (HT File)

Punjab government to hire rehabilitated drug addicts as counsellors at OOATs

The department has already directed all the civil surgeons to submit names of recovered drug addicts holding a graduate degree in any subject.

According to an official letter issued by the state health department on February 25, a copy of which is with Hindustan Times, the proposal to engage rehabilitated addicts as counsellors is under active consideration.

31 held in drug, illicit liquor cases in a fortnight in Sangrur

Senior superintendent of police (SSP) Sartaj Singh Chahal said that as part of an anti-drug campaign, 17 cases were registered and 24 persons arrested. Police recovered 149 grams of heroin, 60 kilograms of poppy husk, 75 grams of sulpha, and 1,980 narcotic pills.

SSP Chahal appealed to the public to continue supporting the police in their efforts to stop drug abuse. He said the police have been holding meetings with village panchayats, sports clubs, and local leaders to discuss ways to prevent drug abuse. (HT File)
