Problem of plenty: Ban no bar, Delhi markets struggle to get rid of plastics

Earbuds with plastic sticks, plastic cutlery and straws were found in use with shopkeepers saying that they were not able to find alternatives suggested by the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC).

A MCD official said enforcement teams seized 689.01 kg of plastic items and issued 368 challans on Friday.

Single-use plastic ban to come into force across India from tomorrow

DPCC officials said that adequate time has been given to suppliers, manufacturers and retailers to phase out these items and ensure a zero inventory of the banned stock from July 1 onwards.

According to an assessment by the environment department in 2020, Delhi generates 1,060 tonnes per day of plastic, which is roughly 10.10% of the total municipal solid waste.(HT File)

Plastic ban: SUP still available in Delhi markets, traders awaiting alternatives

At the Karol Bagh market, multiple shops, include juice and lassi sellers were using plastic cups. While some said that paper cup are costlier than plastic ones, some others said they were phasing out the stock.

City stakeholders told to phase out single-use plastic stocks by June 30

States told to ready single-use plastic ban starting July 1

The prohibited plastic items include ear buds, flags, candy and ice-cream sticks, decorative thermocol, PVC banners less than 100 micron thick, stirrers, wrapping films, cups, glasses, and cutlery, among others.
