National policy draft on agri marketing: Punjab minister Gurmeet Khudian to meet farmers this week

Punjab agriculture and farmers’ welfare minister Gurmeet Singh Khudian, along with additional chief secretary, agriculture and farmers welfare, Anurag Verma, Punjab state farmers’ chairman Sukhpal Singh, Punjab mandi board secretary Ramvir, asked the department officials to call a meeting with representatives of farmers, agriculture experts and other stakeholders immediately to analyse the draft policy shared by the GoI.

Dialogue with proposed panel a futile exercise: Farm leaders

A day after the Supreme Court underscored “deep trust deficit” between the central government, states and farmers, and proposed the establishment of an independent committee to address farmers’ demands, including a legal guarantee of minimum support price (MSP) for crops, the protesting farmers termed it a futile exercise

The farmer unions are yet to take a final call on whether to have a dialogue with the panel or not. Farmers leaders said such committees are merely formed to keep the burning issues on the backburner.

Demanding a law on the minimum support price for all crops and implementation of the Swaminathan Commission’s formula, hundreds of farmers are camping at Shambhu barrier near Ambala and Khanauri barrier in Jind in response to the Delhi Chalo agitation of farmers’ unions.

While marching towards Delhi, the protesting farmers were stopped at Shambhu and Khanauri borders on February 13. Since then, they have been camping there.
