While initially, the state government used to transfer the students’ fee directly to the varsity, they eventually started disbursing it to the students’ accounts under the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) scheme after which students were expected to submit it to their college or university concerned

Haryana identifies 36.7 lakh ghost beneficiaries

Haryana government has identified about 36.74 lakh ghost beneficiaries by putting in place the direct benefit transfer (DBT) mechanism for 74 schemes. The DBT initiative has yielded notional savings amounting to about ₹7,822 crore from 2014-15 to 2022-23 fiscal.

An audit of India's Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) scheme found irregularities, including fake caste certificates and ineligible applicants receiving scholarships. The Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) report also criticised the lack of monitoring to ensure scholarship benefits were reaching eligible applicants. The CAG recommended data verification through biometric attendance and cross-verification of income claims using registered mobile numbers. The DBT scheme aims to eliminate intermediaries and improve the delivery of benefits such as scholarships, wage payments, and subsidies.

Discoms in Uttar Pradesh mull DBT mechanism

Under the proposed system, consumers will have to pay the full bill to discoms at the normal tariff and the state government will give subsidies directly to the consumers
