Aarey: A green that’s fading

What does the inauguration of Mumbai’s Metro 3 link mean for Aarey? There are plans for a sequestered forest, and, around it, more construction. There is conflict brewing – administrators talk of high-rises and infrastructure, while activists ask: What will it take to leave the city’s only remaining green lung alone?

We stand vindicated, says Aaditya after Maha govt demands Kanjurmarg land for Metro depot

After taking cognisance of citizens’ and activists’ protests, the Uddhav Thackeray-led MVA government had shifted the Metro car shed from Aarey to Kanjurmarg.

Reacting to the allegations by Aaditya, BJP leader Ashish Shelar said, “The young leader has been speaking without any basic study about the project. A committee headed by a senior IAS officer appointed by the Thackeray government had recommended the car depot at Aarey. The wrong decision by the Thackeray government to shift it to Kanjurmarg, after 25 percent of the car shed had already been constructed, led to a daily loss of ₹5.50 crore for the two and a half years of the Thackeray government.” (Bhushan Koyande/HT Photo)

Maharashtra: Metro-3 depot back in Aarey Colony

In October 2019, the Bombay high court (HC) quashed a clutch of petition by environmentalists that sought to declare a 33-acre plot in the city’s green lung as a legal forest under the Indian Forest Act (1927). This patch was demarcated in 2013 to construct a car shed for the upcoming Metro 3 line.
