Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) have undergone significant changes and made strategic acquisitions ahead of the IPL 2025 season. After a seventh-place finish in IPL 2024, the franchise aims to revive its performance with new leadership and key player signings.
In January 2025, LSG appointed Rishabh Pant as the new captain, following his acquisition for a record Rs 27 crore. Pant, who previously led the Delhi Capitals, is expected to provide dynamic leadership to the team.
The coaching staff has been bolstered with the addition of former Indian pacer Zaheer Khan as the team mentor. LSG also made notable signings such as Mitchell Marsh, Aiden Markram and David Miller, during the recent IPL auction to strengthen their squad. These acquisitions aim to address the gaps identified in the previous season.
Performance in IPL 2024
The 2024 season was challenging for LSG, as they finished seventh on the points table, missing out on the playoffs for the first time since their inception. This outcome prompted the franchise to make significant changes in leadership and squad composition.
With a revamped squad and new leadership, LSG is gearing up for a promising IPL 2025 season. The team will play seven home matches at the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium, with high-profile clashes against teams like Mumbai Indians, Chennai Super Kings and Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
Lucknow are one of the newest entrants in the Indian Premier League, making its debut in the 2022 edition. Founded in 2021, the team is owned by RPSG Group who previously owned one of the franchises from Pune between 2016 and 2017.
The Governing Council of the Indian Premier League issued a tender for two new sides in August 2021. A total of 22 companies declared an interest but with a high base price for the new teams, there were no more than six serious bidders. The Board of Cricket Control in India allowed a consortium of three companies or individuals to bid for each franchise. The Sanjiv Goenka-owned RPSG Group won the rights to operate the Lucknow franchise with a bid of over Rs 7,090 crore.
The team launched a competition to decide its name, from which the name Lucknow Super Giants was chosen in January 2022. Ahead of the IPL 2022 mega auction, the franchise drafted KL Rahul as their captain, making him the joint highest-paid player in the League. However, LSG, decided not to retain Rahul ahead of the 2024 IPL auction and the stylish right-handed batter was bagged by Delhi Capitals.
Despite finishing third in the group stage in both the 2022 and 2023 seasons, Lucknow fell short in the playoffs, facing elimination in the Eliminator matches against Bengaluru and Mumbai, respectively. However, their consistent performances and fighting spirit have earned them respect and admiration within the league.
