Man killed by mob in Bihar on suspicion of carrying beef, 20 detained: Police

A 55-year-old driver was allegedly beaten to death by a group of people over suspicion of transporting beef in Bihar’s Saran district on Wednesday night, police said.

At least 20 suspects have been detained for interrogation, police told HT on Thursday.

Given the sensitive nature of the crime, patrolling was intensified in the area, police added.

This is the second such incident reported from Saran in nearly four months.

The incident took place at Bangra village on the intervening night of Wednesday and Thursday.

Saran SP Dr Gaurav Mangla said that the deceased has been identified, who is a resident of Majhwalia village.

“The incident took place when the person, working for a bone factory, was on his way to the workshop. His vehicle, carrying bones, broke down near Batraha Bazar. Some people arrived there to help him. There was a foul smell emanating from inside the container after which the people became suspicious. They then forced the driver to open the container”, said an official familiar with the matter.

As soon as the driver opened the container, they found bones after which the driver was physically assaulted. People informed the local police that cattle bones were being smuggled after which they rushed the driver to the hospital where he succumbed.

Police said the bone samples have been sent to a forensic laboratory for testing and further probe is underway into the case.

“Additional forces deployed in the area to prevent untoward incident. The body was handed over to the family members after postmortem. An FIR has been lodged against the accused while raids are on to identify and nab them,” said Dr Mangla.
