Comics take off on Mumbai being in a constant state of work-in-progress

Mumbai: The city is in the process of reinventing itself with the tacit promise that one day its citizens will enjoy all the trappings that are par for course of a true blue Mahanagri – a well-oiled network of Metro, concrete roads, a shiny coastal road and trans-harbour link

Chetan Kolge, who is famously known as ‘Poster Boy Chetan’, uses humorous handmade posters to highlight civic issues in still images. Kolge filmed himself sitting inside a pothole holding up a poster proclaiming ‘We are ready to use helmet for the pillion riders, are you ready to give us better roads?’ It became a talking point on social media. Where is our 90 feet road, ask Chandivali residents

The proposed 90 feet road in the BMC’s Development Plan connects Andheri to Chandivali Farm Road and further to JVLR.

When HT visited DP Road Number 9, this reporter found that so much patchwork had been done on the road that it was a mess of paver blocks, asphalt and cement concrete with multiple potholes to boot. Residents have complained that with access to footpaths completely blocked, they have to walk on the narrow road, which leads to a further slowdown of vehicles and causes traffic jams. Poor safety and fractured limbs at firemen recruitment drive in Mumbai

The physical includes running 800 m under three minutes, doing 20 pull ups, shimmying down a 20 ft rope and jumping from a height of 19 feet, which is nearly two storey-high. It’s during this manoeuvre that things have been getting hairy for the participants

Tushar Kumbhare, 30, from Nagpur is one of those who jumped and the canvas safety gave way. He fractured his left leg. The number of injuries at the recruitment centre are so high that by the time Kumbhare fell, the on-site doctor had even run out of any analgesic spray. (HT Photos)

Mahim’s newly concretised roads develop cracks within days

There are at least four such roads that developed cracks when half the road was open while the other half was being concretised. The cracks were filled with some material, but such shoddy jobs need to be monitored and brought to the notice of the BMC

Within a few months, cracks developed on the road, which were filled with chemicals. Similarly, Dharmaveer Sambhaji Maharaj Road in Mahim developed cracks within 10 days of its opening. Road concretisation may help the city become pothole-free but the focus should be on the quality of the roads instead of the quantity. (Satish Bate/HT PHOTO)
