Goa elections: Parrikar’s son, Utpal, quits BJP; to contest as independent

Utpal Parrikar, 40,was denied a ticket by the party leadership, which chose to instead field Atanasio “Babush” Monserrate, who won the seat in 2019 on a Congress ticket in a by-election held to fill the vacancy resulting from Parrikar’s death.

Manohar Parrikar's son Utpal resigns from BJP, to contest as independent

After being denied of the Panaji constituency which was represented by former Goa chief minister Manohar Parrikar, Utpal on Friday announced he will be contesting the Goa Assembly Election 2020 as an independent candidate.

Goa Polls 2022: Kejriwal said BJP has adopted use and throw policy even with the Parrikar family and this makes Goans sad. Fadnavis said talks are on with Utpal for other seats, not Panaji, as it is not fair to deny the ticket to the sitting MLA. 

Kejriwal said he always respected former Goa CM and former defence minister Manohar Parrikar.

BJP picks Manohar Parrikar aide, not son, for Panaji by-election

The bypoll was required after former Union Defence Minister and Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar passed away on March 17. It will instead see Parrikar’s former aide Siddharth Kuncalienkar as the party’s candidate for the by elections in the state capital.

For the past few weeks, Parrikar’s supporters have been demanding that his sons carry forward his legacy. Parrikar had represented the Panaji seat since 1994, except for a brief period in 2014 when he became a union minister.

‘I’ve not thought about it yet’: Manohar Parrikar’s son on entering politics

Manohar Parrikar died on March 17 after losing his year-long battle with pancreatic cancer. Parrikar was diagnosed with advanced pancreatic cancer in February last year and was repeatedly admitted to hospitals in Goa, Mumbai, New Delhi and New York.
