RT-PCR test mandatory for Sabarimala pilgrims from today

“Covid-19-negative certificate after a RT-PCR test, taken not more than 48 hours prior to their visit to the temple, is a must for the pilgrims to visit the shrine. Else they will not be permitted to undertake the pilgrimage,” N Vasu, TDB president, said in a release.

Sabarimala priest favours delay, temple body says will open on June 14

The Sabarimala tantri (supreme priest) said he has sent a letter to the TDB commissioner and spoke to TDB chairman N Vasu for postponing the opening of the hill shrine. The TDB, however, claims that it has received no communication in this matter.

The tantri said he has sent a letter to the TDB commissioner and spoke to TDB chairman N Vasu regarding the opening of the hill shrine.

The TDB runs Sabarimala (in Pathanamthitta district) and thousand-odd other temples in south and central Kerala. The tantri is usually considered as the final word on all ritualistic matters.

Covid-19 update: Sabarimala may turn to digital offerings

The Sabrimala Temple was closed after monthly puja on March 18 days before the lockdown was imposed on March 25. At least 14,000 devotees trekked to the hill shrine in Pathanamthitta district despite the government and TDB’s warnings against large gatherings at the temple in view of the pandemic, according to reports.

On day three of the Sabarimala temple opening, devotees continue to throng the hill for completing their pilgrimage to the Ayyappa temple. However, tension remains as women attempt to enter the temple. After two women unsuccessfully attempted to trek up to the hill-shrine, two women undertook the long walk on Friday morning under a police guard of more than 150 personnel. Devotees have been aggressively protesting a Supreme Court order that allows women of menstrual age to enter the temple, a ban that was followed for decades as a religious practice.
