Heat and rust: Mridula Ramesh writes on the red sand desert in Tamil Nadu

The dunes of Teri Kaadu serve as a time capsule of how climate change can alter history, move oceans, erase cities. It is now changing again. Trees are being planted, water sucked up by invasive species. There’s likely an equivalent story unfolding near you, and a different lesson in each.

Review: Marginlands by Arati Kumar-Rao

Presenting the wonders of the land and also the environmental catastrophes being unleashed by detrimental policies conceived without consulting those who will be most affected by them

“After the most enchanting descriptions of how the Thar’s residents have coaxed water and agriculture from a seemingly punishing terrain, she reveals how limestone mines, windmills, and a canal — supposedly harbingers of development — have destroyed its water sources, wildlife, agricultural fields, and knowledge nurtured over centuries. “ (Dietmar Temps/Shutterstock)

Wildbuzz: Moonless race to Longewala

Chandigarh's Munish Jauhar recently completed the Hell Race Border Ultra marathon in the Thar desert, finishing fifth. Jauhar faced challenges running at night but was rewarded with a clear sky and the sounds of nature. The race started in harsh sunlight but Jauhar found distraction in observing wildlife. Meanwhile, in the Shivalik jungles behind Chandigarh, the cold weather has brought a stillness and a chance to appreciate the beauty of nature.

The Thar needs restoration; and greening is not the solution

The article has been authored by Chetan Misher  an ecologist studying the dry grasslands of India and their associated wildlife . And Priya R, a geologist who has worked on landscape ecology and management in Rajasthan and the Western Ghats.

Today, while we are celebrating the 75th Independence of our nation, our desert is greener than it ever was. Yet this greening does not symbolise a healthy functional state of the Thar ecosystem.

Dust storm from Afghanistan could hit north India in next 48 hours

This, along with dust coming in from Thar Desert in Rajasthan because of strong winds, could lead to a sharp increase in dust pollution in the national capital by Thursday.

Why India’s election is among the world’s most expensive

This time the polling exercise, due to start on April 11 and be completed by May 19, will cost an unprecedented 500 billion rupees ($7 billion), according to the New Delhi-based Centre for Media Studies. About $6.5 billion was spent during the US presidential and congressional races in 2016.

The world’s biggest democracy will soon hold what’s likely to be one of the world’s costliest elections. India’s six-week-long vote will span the Himalayan range in the north, the Indian Ocean in the south, the Thar desert in the west and the mangroves of the Sundarbans in the east.(AFP Photo)

The SC ruling on firecrackers is a balanced one

Much will now depend on how the order is implemented. The court’s judgment makes it clear that the local police will be responsible, and held in contempt of court should they fail in their duty.

It is unfortunate that there still isn’t much authoritative research on Delhi’s annual bad-air problem. What is known is that it is a problem caused by vehicular pollution, construction dust, dust from the desert that is borne into Delhi by winds, stubble burning in Punjab and Haryana, and, momentarily, firecrackers on Diwali (and also on New Year and Christmas).(HT)
