Tourists behind Morni fire to face action under Forest Act

District forest officer (DFO) Vishal Kaushik, who is also the complainant in the police case, said they are assessing the extent of the damage. However, preliminary assessment indicates it was a ground fire. He further explained that if the tourists are found guilty under the Forest Act, they could face a fine of up to ₹1 lakh. A detailed inquiry has been initiated, and the report is expected soon.

Stubble burning: 1.47-crore fine collected from Punjab, Haryana farmers

According to a Delhi Pollution Control Committee analysis, the city experiences peak pollution from November 1 to 15, coinciding with a rise in stubble-burning incidents in Punjab and Haryana.

Farmers with less than two acres of land will now pay an environmental compensation of <span class='webrupee'>₹</span>5,000, up from <span class='webrupee'>₹</span>2,500, while those with land between two and five acres will be fined <span class='webrupee'>₹</span>10,000 instead of <span class='webrupee'>₹</span>5,000. 5-fold rise in FIRs as Punjab takes a tough stance against farm fires

The tough stance seemed to have paid off as the state recorded a 70% drop in farm fire cases this year. Against 36,663 cases between September 15 and November 30 last year, 10,909 cases were reported this year

The government also fixed responsibility on nodal officers and supervisors, issuing show-cause notices to 1,384 such employees for “dereliction of duty”. (PTI)

With 77 cases, Punjab sees dip in farm fires

Meanwhile, according to the Central Pollution Control Board, both Ludhiana and Mandi Gobindgarh recorded the worst air level with an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 271, which falls in ‘poor category’, followed by 215 in Jalandhar.

Punjab logs 162 stubble burning cases

In some good news, Punjab’s air quality index (AQI) improved slightly though four cities still had its AQI in the “poor” (201-300) category.

At 28, Ludhiana had the highest number of cases followed by Mansa, 19, Fazilka, 16, and Barnala 15. Bathinda, Ferozepur and Moga recorded 14 cases each while Sangrur had 11 cases. (REUTERS)
