Somnath Bharti sent to Tihar after court upholds conviction in AIIMS case

The court, however, set aside his conviction under sections 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 353 (assault or use of criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty) read with section 149 of IPC.

Additional chief metropolitan magistrate Ravindra Kumar Pandey also imposed a fine of ₹1 lakh on Bharti, the MLA from Malviya Nagar. The judge, however, granted Bharti bail to enable him to file an appeal before the high court against the conviction and jail term.

Somnath Bharti acquitted in 2014 case of assault on African woman

Additional chief metropolitan magistrate (ACMM) Harvinder Singh passed the judgment in the case related to an alleged assault on a citizen of Democratic Republic of Congo, who was then studying at Amity University, Noida.

On Sep 29, 2014, a charge sheet was filed by the police against Bharti and 17 others for molestation and creating a ruckus on January 16 midnight when a mob allegedly ‘raided’ a house in south Delhi, police said on Wednesday.
