NGT raps Rajasthan on the knuckles for inadequate measures in Sambhar lake

The NGT said in its order that the problem noted of management of waste and sewage, removal of encroachment and disposal of sodium sulphate waste/sludge generated from salt refining units still remain to be fully tackled .

Despite bad ecology, Sambhar got more birds this year than before

The wetland was in the news in November last year after more than 20,000 birds died due to botulism, a neuromuscular illness caused by bacteria, to the concern of environmentalists and ornithologists.

The waterbird census is coordinated by Wetlands International South Asia and is carried out in January every year in Asia and Australasia across 27countries with the participation of thousands of volunteers to record the status of important wetlands habitat and water birds diversity with population estimates.(HT PHOTO.)

NGT notice to Centre, Rajasthan on bird deaths around Sambhar Lake

The NGT bench ordered that the National Wetland Authority, State Wetland Authority, Rajasthan State Pollution Control Board and Jaipur district magistrate to file a joint factual and action taken report before the next date of hearing on January 22, 2020.

Rajasthan’s Sambhar lake, where 18,000 birds died, among worst wetlands in India

Sambhar lake is among the eight worst-rated wetlands in the country when it comes to ecosystem management , according to a draft report prepared by the environment ministry in consultation with several independent experts.

A month ago, Rajasthan health card found Sambhar Lake to be highly polluted

The health card found that Sambhar, India’s biggest inland salt-water lake spanning 24,000 hectares, had have high levels of salinity. The death toll of migratory birds reached 15,665 on Sunday.

1,000 migratory birds found dead near Sambhar lake in Rajasthan

Jaipur district veterinary doctor, Ashok Kumar, said prima facie it seems to be a case of water contamination but clarity will come only when the viscera investigation reports come. The viscera have been sent to a laboratory in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh for tests.
