After Rohtang, focus shifts to Shinku La tunnel between Ladakh and Lahaul

Ahead of PM Modi’s visit, strategic Atal Rohtang Tunnel ready for inauguration

On completion, it is set to become the world’s longest road tunnel at an altitude above 3,000 metres. The tunnel is scheduled to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in September.

The Rohtang Tunnel is being constructed in the Pir Panjal ranges of Himachal Pradesh, since the Manali-Sarchu-Leh road remains closed for nearly six months in a year due to the Rohtang Pass being completely snow clad between November and April.(HT PHOTO.)

8.8 km long, 3,000 metre above sea: Know everything about Atal Tunnel

The tunnel is also called Atal Tunnel, as the then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee had announced the project on June 3, 2000. The work was entrusted to the Border Roads Organisation (BRO).

Himachal Pradesh to run vistadome buses inside Rohtang tunnel for tourists

Vistadome buses will have a glass rooftop for a panoramic view through the hilly region and will ply through the 8.8-km tunnel, named after former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee

Over 650 rescued from Lahaul-Spiti, hundreds still stranded in hills
