Sankranti or Makar Sankranti is a harvest festival that is celebrated across the country in different ways. It is known as Lohri in Punjab, Pedda Panduga in Andhra Pradesh, Makara Sankranti in Karnataka, Telangana, and Maharashtra, Pongal in Tamil Nadu, Magh Bihu or Bhogali Bihu in Assam, Magha Mela in parts of central and north India, as Makar Sankranti in the west, Makara Sankranti or Shankaranti in Kerala, and by other names. In Assam, people celebrate the festival by lighting bonfires and feasting traditional meals including lip-smacking pithas.
