New personal data protection bill ‘at the earliest’: Govt to SC

According to a short affidavit submitted by the Centre before a constitution bench, the Union ministry for electronics and technology (MeitY) has floated the Digital Data Protection Bill, 2022, and initiated the process of consultation with the public and other stakeholders.

In its affidavit, the government further pointed out that there are existing rules framed under the Information Technology Act, casting an obligation on intermediaries as well as body corporates handling sensitive personal data to ascertain protection of such data. (HT)

TikTok is not handing over American users' data to China: CEO

Privacy row: Delhi high court seeks CCI stand on Facebook, WhatsApp appeals

A Delhi high court bench of chief justice D N Patel and Justice Jasmeet Singh issued notice to the CCI which had ordered the probe and sought its response on the appeals of Facebook and WhatsApp by May 21, the next date of hearing.

Govt wants WhatsApp privacy policy blocked

The govt also told the court that the new privacy policy does not provide opportunity to review or amend the full information submitted by a user, pointing out that changes allowed to be made are limited to the name, picture, mobile number and “about” information.

The controversy relates to the company’s decision in January to enforce a new privacy policy that will allow it to share some data about users’ interactions with business accounts with its parent company Facebook, and that accepting these terms were mandatory in order to use the service.(Reuters)
