Covid-19: Lockdown leads to spike in tea prices; 79% hike in August wholesale prices

A sudden drop in production for nearly a month due to the Covid-19-induced 68-day lockdown restrictions is being attributed as the main reason for the hike in tea prices this year

Wholesale inflation rises to 0.16% in August

The index for primary articles with a weightage of 22.62 per cent increased by 1.81 per cent to 146.3 in August from 143.7 in July. Prices of minerals increased by 10.21 per cent, crude petroleum and natural gas by 4.72 per cent, non-food articles by 3.06 per cent and food articles by 0.93 per cent.

It was at minus 0.58 per cent in July, said a statement issued by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.

WPI inflation rises to 3.1 percent in January

The annual inflation, based on monthly wholesale price index (WPI), was at 2.76 per cent during the same month a year ago (January 2019).

Wholesale price-based inflation unchanged at 1.08 per cent in August

The wholesale price index (WPI)-based inflation was at 1.08 per cent in July this year and 4.62 per cent in August 2018.

Inflation in food articles rose to 7.67 per cent in August from 6.15 per cent in July this year mainly on account of rise in prices of vegetables and protein-rich items.(AFP file photo)
