Advocate writes to AG seeking consent to initiate contempt proceeding against Prashant Bhushan

Earlier, the attorney general had declined consent for initiation of criminal contempt proceedings against Bhushan for his tweets in which he was critical of Chief Justice of India (CJI) S A Bobde.

Power of contempt of court misused to stifle free speech: Prashant Bhushan

The top court had on Monday imposed a token fine of Re 1 on Bhushan for his tweets against the judiciary. It asked him to deposit the fine by September 15, failing which he would attract a jail term of three months and debarment from law practice for three years.

Supreme Court fines Prashant Bhushan Re 1. Here’s what it said

The case took 40 days to reach a conclusion from the date of its first hearing. It was registered on July 9 and the first hearing in the matter was held on July 22.
