Ozone pollution linked with increased hospitalizations for heart disease: Study

Daily eight-hour maximum average concentrations of ozone, fine particulate matter (PM2.5), inhalable particles (PM10), sulfur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide and carbon monoxide were obtained for each city from the China National Urban Air Quality Real-time Publishing Platform.

Exposure to ambient ozone was associated with increased hospital admissions for all cardiovascular diseases studied except haemorrhagic stroke, independent of other air pollutants.(Pixabay)

Ozone pollution no longer just a summer phenomenon, says CSE study

The primary emission sources of ozone include those from vehicles, power plants, factories, and other combustion sources. These undergo cyclic reactions in the presence of sunlight to generate ground level ozone.

The study assessed trends during different seasons – summer (March-June), winter (October-February) and monsoon (July-September), between 2018 and 2021 (up to July 18). (Sanchit Khanna/HT PHOTO)

Earth’s mass extinction could have been caused by exploding stars

Fossil evidence indicates a 300,000-year decline in biodiversity leading up to the Devonian-Carboniferous mass extinction, suggesting the possibility of multiple catastrophes, maybe even multiple supernova explosions.

A supernova, on the other hand, delivers a one-two punch, the researchers said. The explosion immediately bathes Earth with damaging UV, X-rays and gamma rays. (Representational Image)(Unsplash)

Earth will remember humans for the mess we left behind, here’s how

Long after time and erosion have turned all our feats of art and engineering to dust, our mess will remain. Naming this era after ourselves is more of a confession.

A ray of hope for the ozone layer

Efforts to replace chemicals with less harmful ones like hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) have begun to pay off

This combination of images made available by NASA shows areas of low ozone above Antarctica on September 2000, left, and September 2018. More protection: UN says Earth’s ozone layer is healing

The ozone layer had been thinning since the late 1970s. Scientist raised the alarm and ozone-depleting chemicals were phased out worldwide.
