The environmental tragedy in Mumbai’s hinterland

In 2017, this newspaper reported about industrial effluents being released in the Kasadi river in Taloja, an industrial town in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). The news was picked up by the international media, not because industrial pollution in India was a cause for concern in the West but because the story provided striking visuals of dogs with blue fur.

Sewage from 1,700 colonies is dumped directly into Yamuna, says green body

Yamuna is almost dead with high levels of toxic chemicals. The committee said sewage, mainly faecal sludge from these colonies being directly emptied into the river, adds to extremely high levels of pollutants not allowing the water body to sustain life.

The absence of sewer lines in 1,700 unauthorised colonies — housing around 40 lakh people — in the national capital is one of the major reasons of pollution in the Yamuna.(HT File Photo)

Can Clean India campaign pave way for reversing Ganga pollution curve?

Under Swachh Bharat Mission, 4,471 villages have been declared open defecation-free along the Ganga basin with almost complete coverage in Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh . Only 694 villages came under the ODF category in 2015-16.

Considering that the domestic sewage load in Ganga river is so high, officials are banking on Swachh Bharat Mission to bring it down in the coming years even as there has been little improvement in the river water’s quality.(File Photo)
