Particulates blown away but ozone emerges as primary health threat in Gurugram

So far this month, Gurugram has recorded five days when ozone was the city’s ‘prominent pollutant’, data from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) has showed.

Experts called this trend alarming as prevalence of ground-level ozone, in turn, proves that other pollutants, such as NOx and SOx are also present in high quantities.(HT Photo)

Air in 2018 most polluted in 20 years in Maharashtra

A sharp drop in particulate pollution was recorded in 2001 when levels fell to 67.2µg/m3 while in 1999, they were at 115µg/m3. PM2.5 levels, which are being measured since 2015, were also the highest in 2018 for Mumbai. Levels of sulphur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxide (NOx) levels were within limits (see box).

Data from the environment ministry showed the annual average of PM 10 levels in Mumbai were 166µg/m3 in 2018 and 151µg/m3 in 2017.(HT Photo)

Gurugram’s PM2.5 stayed in ‘danger zone’ in March

During the first 30 days of March, the city had six days of ‘satisfactory’ air quality, 19 days of ‘moderate’ air quality and four days of ‘poor’ air quality, as per the Central Pollution Control Board’s (CPCB) daily air quality index (AQI) bulletin.

However, the condition was better than February’s daily average of 83.6ug/m3, indicating cleaner air in March.(Yogendra Kumar/HT PHOTO)
