Body spotted in Meghalaya mine, retrieval unclear

The Navy’s underwater remotely operated vehicle on Wednesday spotted a body during the search for 15 workers trapped in an illegal coal mine in Meghalaya since December 13. However, there is no clarity as to how long it will take to retrieve the body, which could be in a decomposed state.

28 lakh litres pumped out of Meghalaya’s rat-hole mine, still no change in water level

Kirloskar Brothers Ltd pumps, which was operational from 7 pm on Wednesday evening and continued to run for 11 hours, have pumped out 28 lakh litres from the main shaft, the official said.

Multi-agencies personnel used high-powered pumps to drain out 28 lakh litres of water from the main shaft, where 15 miners got trapped, but Navy divers on Thursday found no change in the water level in the rat-hole mine to resume search operation, officials said.(AFP File Photo)

Water levels in Meghalaya mine haven’t gone down since Dec 13: Centre to SC

The Centre said 71 NDRF personnel, 20 State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) personnel, 16 personnel from the Navy, besides those from Odisha Fire Service, Coal India and officials of Kirloskar Motors were engaged in the rescue efforts.
