The Gujarat High Court had last year convicted Bajrang Dal leader Babu Bajrangi and others, but acquitted former BJP minister Maya Kodnani for want of evidence in the case.

Former Gujarat minister Maya Kodnani, a gynaecologist by profession, was accused and convicted of inciting violence during the 2002 Naroda Patiya massacre by a SIT court. However, the Gujarat high court gave her the benefit of doubt and acquitted her on Friday.

2002 Gujarat riots: Delay in naming Maya Kodnani as Naroda Patiya accused helped in her acquittal

Former Gujarat minister Maya Kodnani was given the benefit of doubt and acquitted in the Naroda Patiya riots case. The benefit of doubt was largely due to the delay in naming Kodnani as one of the accused after the riots in 2002; she was only named in 2008.

Gujarat HC likely to pronounce order on appeals in Naroda-Patiya riot case today

While the convicts challenged the lower court’s order in the high court, a Special Investigation Team appealed against the acquittal of 29 people.
