Power play in ruling alliance as Bhujbal takes on Jarange-Patil

Chhagan Bhujbal, a two-time deputy chief minister, is taking on Maratha reservation activist Manoj Jarange-Patil, positioning himself as an OBC leader. Bhujbal is receiving support from both his party boss Ajit Pawar and Devendra Fadnavis, as the ruling alliance seeks to maintain support from both Marathas and OBCs. The opposition believes there is a match-fixing between the ruling alliance leaders. The deadline set by Jarange-Patil for the government to decide on Marathas' inclusion in the OBC category is December 24, and both communities are preparing for a showdown. Some BJP leaders think that Jarange-Patil's agitation will lose steam as his demand for all Marathas to be given Kunbi caste certificates is legally untenable. Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, who was recovering from dengue, quickly made a recovery and resumed his political activities. Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has ruled out shifting to national politics and may be back as chief minister soon, depending on the Supreme Court's ruling on a disqualification petition against Chief Minister Eknath Shinde.

Osmanabad youth allegedly dies by suicide in Maratha reservation protests

A Maratha youth in Osmanabad died by suicide, becoming the first suicide in recent years for the cause of Maratha reservation. The incident has led to rising tension in the district, with locals protesting and a bandh being called. The local administration is investigating the claims that the demand for reservation was the motive behind the suicide. This comes after the Supreme Court quashed the reservation for the Maratha community in education and jobs.

Maratha quota agitation highlights: Another round of protests planned to keep up pressure

Maratha outfits demanding reservation for the community will launch another round of protests in the state on Wednesday. The agitation has intensified despite chief minister Devendra Fadnavis’ commitment to grant reservation to the community. Sit-in protests outside the residences of lawmakers across Maharashtra and at Mumbai’s Azad Maidan have been planned. Demonstration in the state last week had turned violent and five protesters reportedly committed suicide in solidarity with the Maratha demand since July 23. Maharashtra currently has 52% per cent reservation for various categories including other backward classes, scheduled castes and scheduled tribes in education and government jobs. Here are the highlights on Maratha protests:
