Where the Indian economic story went wrong

The ongoing economic recovery is being driven by a small section of the economy, and led by profits rather than wages. We can hope, on a wing and a prayer, that the government will finally act.

By various estimates, close to 90% of the workforce in India is employed in the unorganised sector and this has been severely impacted(AP)

Design a safety net for poor urban women

Perhaps one way would be to first create a database and consider some form of cash incentive to at least tide them over at a time when the cost of food, medicines and other necessities has gone up.

The devastation wreaked by Covid-19 has hurt people across India in numerous ways. While there has been much talk of safety net schemes and programmes for the rural poor, the same cannot be said for the urban poor.(Satyabrata Tripathy/HT Photo)

Covid-19: A dip in women in the workforce is likely | Opinion

The central and state governments and the private sector must come up with innovative solutions to make women a real part of the next phase of the growth story.

Women will then be left to tend the family, and in many cases, the family’s agricultural fields. Here, a concerted effort should be made to give them better tools to deal with agriculture in the form of easy to access loans and technology.(HTPhoto)

Why the stimulus will boost the Indian economy, writes Hardeep Puri

Even as the government has proactively dealt with the crisis, the Opposition has engaged in baseless criticism

Even though the PM clearly specified that the approach is to be self-reliant by actively participating and leading the global value chains without being self-centred or inward-looking, the Opposition resorted to scaremongering about MNCs being shown the door when the exact opposite is being attempted by the government.(PTI)

The budget does not address the crisis of demand | Opinion

The FM made a good faith attempt to present her vision. But the budget lacked a diagnosis of what is wrong, a prescription to address it, and made baffling choices

The decline in consumption demand, especially in rural India, is a matter of pressing concern. But the budget may have made the problem worse with cuts in allocation. Instead, it should have streamlined public finance management systems and re-prioritised expenditure(Getty Images/iStockphoto)
