PMC begins handover of over 3.5 hectares of land reserved as playground to Katraj Dairy

The Pune Municipal Corporation has approved a proposal to cancel the reservation of land in Katraj for a playground and reserve it for dairy production instead. The land will be handed over to Katraj Dairy, which is backed by the Ajit Pawar faction of the NCP. The proposal will be put forward for suggestions and objections before final approval. The land has an estimated market price of ₹100 crore.

PMC to set up STPs at Katraj, Pashan lakes to solve hyacinth problem

Pune Municipal Corporation plans to construct sewage treatment plants at Katraj and Pashan lakes to counter hyacinth growth. It has set aside an area and will receive financial assistance from the Union government's 15th Finance Commission. The civic body spends INR5m ($67,000) p.a. removing hyacinths from the three lakes. In 2017, it set aside INR100m for a drain system to prevent untreated water from directly flowing into Katraj lake. Shreedhar Yeolekar, executive engineer, said the total cost of the STPs is INR170m, with the corporation contributing 50% of the funds.

PMC spending crores on removing water hyacinth but problem remains

The Pune Municipal Corporation has spent almost Rs20 crores over the past decade removing water hyacinth from the Mula-Mutha river and lakes in its jurisdiction, but drainage flowing into these water bodies causes the hyacinth to reappear. The PMC has not increased its budget to clear hyacinth from Rs2 crores to Rs4.50 crores and its environment department has initiated the tendering process to remove hyacinth following complaints from citizens regarding the mosquito menace.
