Exit deals don’t negate right to compensation: Supreme Court order

In the order that could strengthen the rights of homebuyers under the Consumer Protection Act, the court has held that the right to claim compensation is independent of schemes offered by developers that give an option to the buyers to rescind their purchase.

Top court takes exception to selective disclosures by media in criminal trials

The apex court was hearing a case related to the suicide of a doctor in Agra on August 6, following which her father registered a dowry harassment case against her husband and in-laws on August 7. Within a couple of days of the death, the alleged suicide note was published in local newspapers.

Aged in-laws can’t evict married woman: Supreme Court

The court held that whenever such a dispute arises before the senior citizens tribunal, it cannot simply order for eviction of the daughter-in-law, but what is required on its part is to “appropriately mould reliefs, after noticing the competing claims of the parties”.

Sudarshan News gets notice from Centre for airing show

Solicitor general Tushar Mehta informed the Supreme Court on Wednesday about the notice during the hearing on a public interest litigation that sought restraint to be placed on the show, titled Bindas Bol, whose telecast was blocked by the top court with six episodes remaining to be telecast.

The bench, also comprising justices Indu Malhotra and KM Joseph, reminded the Centre that the notice had been issued only after the court stayed the airing of the show.

SC rescues traders facing 200% customs duty on Pak imports post-Pulwama attack

The Supreme Court on Wednesday came to the rescue of certain traders who were asked to pay “enhanced custom duty of 200%” on imported goods from Pakistan due to sudden increase in the tariff by the Centre following the 2019 Pulwama terror attack and ordered that they will have to pay the duty under the older tariff.
