Inflation dips to 3.54%, lowest since August 2019

India's inflation rate dropped to a 5-year low of 3.5% in July, below the RBI's 4% target, mainly due to a favorable base effect, not a significant economic change.

Govt considers windfall tax on oil and gas giants

The tax, which may be levied when oil prices, for instance, cross a certain level, will boost the government’s finances, and help fund efforts to protect vulnerable sections from rampant inflation.

This is not the first time India is considering a windfall tax. Policymakers flirted with the idea in 2018, and before that in 2008, when oil prices were on a high, and many Indian oil producers made a killing. Both times, the idea was abandoned, after it was strongly opposed by private oil companies. (AFP)

Reboot, not reform, is the key economic challenge

While there is more than enough evidence to show that the BJP under Narendra Modi has managed to buck economic headwinds to its political fortunes, there can be little doubt that both the government and the BJP would like to revive the economy as soon as they can.

What has changed in the eight years of Narendra Modi and his government have spent in power, is that reform, or lack of it, is not the central parameter on which this government is being judged anymore. (BLOOMBERG PHOTO.)(HT_PRINT)
