BMC school denies admission to 7 students

Seven students from Dharavi, Mumbai, who were expelled from private schools for nonpayment of fees, have been denied admission to a BMC-run school despite legal provisions. The parents of the affected students, who are daily wage workers, sought help from the civic body's education officer and the child rights commission, but were unsuccessful. The private school management refused to issue school leaving certificates until the pending fees were cleared. The parents then approached the BMC-run school, but the principal asked the children to take an exam before admission and ultimately refused them entry.

Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray visited Dharavi and urged residents not to leave their homes for transit camps, claiming Adanis would take over the land. Thackeray and Congress have been protesting against Adani Realty's contract for the Dharavi Makeover project. The proposal to relocate ineligible residents of Dharavi to Mulund is facing opposition from ruling party leaders and the opposition. There are concerns about transforming Mulund East into 'Navi Dharavi' or 'Naya Mumbra.' BJP and opposition leaders have urged the chief minister and his deputies to not convert Mulund East into a slum area. The housing department has written to the urban development department seeking the transfer of land in Mulund for the Dharavi Redevelopment Project (DRP). Members from both the ruling party and the opposition have expressed their opposition to the proposal.

‘Navi Dharavi’ at Mulund: Housing dept seeks 64 acres from BMC to resettle Dharavi residents

The state government of Mumbai plans to resettle slum dwellers from Dharavi in two plots owned by the BMC in Mulund, measuring 64 acres. These plots will be used to build residential units for people affected by the Dharavi Redevelopment Project. The housing department has requested the transfer of the land parcels to the Dharavi Redevelopment Project Pvt Ltd. BJP former MP Kirit Somaiya has objected to the plan, stating that rehabilitating so many people in one area is not appropriate.
