Defence, tech in focus at bilateral meetings

Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin discussed security issues in East Asia and the Indian Ocean region, as well as deepening defense industrial cooperation and defense innovation initiatives. Jaishankar also met with Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo to discuss technology and commerce. The meetings come ahead of the upcoming 2+2 dialogue between the foreign and defense ministers of both countries. Progress has been made on defense and tech cooperation between India and the US this year.

Govt’s decision on FDI in defence to enhance self-reliance in sector: Piyush Goyal

The government has permitted 74 per cent foreign direct investment (FDI) under automatic route in the sector with certain conditions.

The permit for up to 74 per cent FDI in the defence manufacturing through the automatic route was announced by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in May while announcing the fourth tranche of the Rs 20 lakh crore stimulus package for the coronavirus-hit economy.(PTI)

The draft Defence Production Policy-2018, released in March, visualises India as one of the top five countries in the aerospace and defence sectors in the coming years, with defence goods and services accounting for a turnover of Rs1.7 lakh crore by 2025.
