Capital just 30mm rainfall away from eclipsing all-time record

Since January 1, the Safdarjung weather station – representative of weather records for the city – has recorded 1,502.8mm of rain. In a typical year, Delhi gets 779mm, which means 2021 has brought the city close to twice the amount of rain as a normal year

A large chunk of the rainfall seen this year has come in the monsoon period. Between June 1 and September 30 (the period officially classified as monsoon), the city got 1,169.7mm of rainfall -- an excess of 80% over the long-period average of 648.9mm. (PTI File)

Owner of tugboat that sank during Tauktae booked

Barge P305 and Varaprada -- both support vessels working for the state-run ONGC’s offshore oilfields near Mumbai -- had borne the brunt of the cyclone, which made landfall on Gujarat coast on May 17.

Mini tornado hits villages of West Bengal before cyclone

The incident took the residents of Bandel and Chinsurah in the Hooghly district and Halisaha in the North 24 Parganas district by surprise, however, the meteorological experts said tornadoes can develop before an approaching cyclone or a major thunderstorm.

Over 1 million evacuated, states brace for Yaas landfall today

In Bengal, two people were electrocuted and around 80 houses were destroyed in a pre-cyclone storm as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said the cyclone was likely to hit close to the Chandbali-Dhamra port in Odisha by noon on Wednesday.

Tauktae made this May the rainiest in Delhi in 13 years: IMD

Over 119mm of incessant rain, induced by the remnants of Cycolne Tauktae and a western disturbance, had lashed Delhi in the 24 hours beginning 8.30am Wednesday till 8.30am Thursday last week, breaking the capital’s all-time 24-hour rainfall record for the month of May.

Navy recovers 6 more bodies of barge’s crew, 20 missing

Search is still on for 20 missing personnel -- nine crew members of P305 and 11 who were on board tugboat Varaprada, which also sank during the cyclone. The Navy dispatched two specialised diving teams from Mumbai on Saturday morning to augment the search.

The Navy on Thursday morning launched a fresh aerial search and rescue mission, deploying helicopters to scour the waters off Mumbai coast, where the accommodation barge P305 went adrift in Cyclone Tauktae fury before it sank Monday.
