State tree authority gives nod to remove 750 trees in Mumbai, Thane

The Maharashtra State Tree Authority has approved the felling of 753 trees in Mumbai and Thane for two projects, including a new railway station and a private building. This is likely the last such approval granted by the Authority, which may be limited to existing on paper. The Authority has approved the felling of at least 12,000 trees across the state since its inception. Out of the 753 trees, 358 are slated to be transplanted, but the success rate of previous transplantation exercises is low.

It is alleged that the project received its commencement certificate (CC) from City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO), and not Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC), under whose administrative jurisdiction the plot falls.
