Rajya Sabha polls: When tribal leader Chottu Bhai Vasava refused to vote

The decision of not voting, Vasava told HT, was a mark of protest against the BJP government’s “inability” to protect the rights of the tribal communities in the state. The leader added that he was equally disillusioned by the Congress.

Infighting in Gujarat Congress over Rajya Sabha polls

Eight Congress legislators have resigned from the assembly since March, and apart from two other vacancies due to court cases over poll-related disputes, the effective strength of the 182-member Gujarat assembly now stands at 172.

A Gujarat Congress leader said on the condition of anonymity that 42 of the 65 legislators back Solanki and would vote for him.(PTI)

Lok Sabha elections 2019: Home to Amul, Anand is Gujarat’s bellwether seat

The BJP is hoping that it will be able to retain all the 26 Lok Sabha seats that it swept in the 2014 general election. Gujarat will go to polls in a single phase on April 23. Anand, a traditional Congress bastion, will be a bellwether seat.

Solanki belongs to the OBC Kshatriya Thakor caste, with over 750,000 voters, while the BJP candidate Mitesh Patel belongs to the Patidar community, with around 242,000 voters. Muslim voters number around 140,000.(HT Photo)
