Ashok Lavasa resigns as Election Commissioner

Lavasa had had several stints in various government departments, including as secretary in the Union finance ministry. As CEC, Lavasa would have overseen elections in West Bengal, Manipur, Goa, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, and Uttarakhand.

I-T notices to election commissioner Ashok Lavasa’s wife over ‘tax evasion’

The notices seek explanations from Novel Singhal Lavasa about her income-related details when she was the director of about a dozen private companies between 2015 and 2017, the officials said. An I-T department official confirmed that the notices had been sent, but declined to elaborate on their contents.

The poll body was responding to Pune-based RTI activist Vihar Durve who had demanded Lavasa’s dissent notes, pertaining to speeches given by Modi in rallies at Wardha on April 1, Latur on April 9, Patan and Barmer on April 21 and Varanasi on April 25.

EC overrules Ashok Lavasa again, he plans to skip meetings on poll code violations

Disagreement over the procedure followed for deciding MCC cases erupted in the poll body following Lavasa’s objection to the process followed to give clean chits to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Amit Shah and Congress president Rahul Gandhi.

Reacting to Lavasa’s demand, Arora on Saturday issued a statement in which he sought to downplay the discord within the poll panel and said the three commissioners are not expected to be clones of each other.
